Contract ENG 08-4 Morningside Water Main

The City of Edina’s Public Works Department has received calls from property owners north of West 42nd Street who are reporting discolored water. The City, which always takes drinking water concerns seriously, immediately began flushing and testing water in the area. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is working closely with the City of Edina to investigate these water quality issues. At this time, tested samples collected by the city and area residents do not appear to indicate a health risk associated with the drinking water in the area north of West 42nd Street in Edina. MDH has reviewed those test results and deemed the samples taken in the area north of West 42nd Street to be within regulated limits established by the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act. At this time, no additional tests have been requested by MDH.

The Public Works Department of the City of Edina continues to work on the red water issue that is prevalent within the Morningside Neighborhood of Edina. City and MDH officials have indicated that high iron levels likely are causing the water discolorations. However, such levels are unlikely to pose significant health risks.

Water for the Morningside Neighborhood comes from the City of Minneapolis. Therefore, the City of Minneapolis and MDH are working with the City of Edina to come up with a short-term solution to reduce or eliminate the red water. You might have noticed the recent flushing and flow monitoring in the area; this will help us determine a potential solution. A long-term solution that the City of Edina is exploring could involve relining the pipes to help reduce the red water occurrences. A portion of this work could take place during the summers of 2008 and 2009.

Some homeowners have experienced red water while doing laundry. The City recommends running the water at an adjacent faucet prior to laundering lighter colors. If you do experience red water during the wash cycle, please contact our Utility Department (952-826-0311) to have us drop-off a cleaning additive called “RoVer,” which will remove iron from the clothes and other fixtures that have been stained. Read and follow all instructions given with the “Rover.”
