Energy & Environment Commission

Rule

The Energy & Environment Commission was established in April 2007 to help the City stay on the forefront of issues of sustainability. Duties of the commission include:
 

  • Examining and recommending best practices for energy conservation for Edina’s residents and businesses, including recommendations for a “green” building code, use of Energy Star appliances and other energy-reduction targets.
  • Examining and recommending changes in City purchases and operations to conserve energy.
  • Evaluating and monitoring the provision of a residential recycling program.
  • Evaluating and monitoring the provision of a privately provided solid waste program, as well as a reduction in municipal solid wastes.
  • Evaluating and encouraging improvements in air and water quality.
  • Educating the public about energy issues, reduction, conservation, reuse, recycling and environmental protection.


The nine-member commission includes Chairman Surya Iyer, Dianne Plunkett Latham, Ian Nelson, Raymond O'Connell, John Owens, M. Germana Paterlini, Julie Risser, Bill Sierks and Paul Thompson.

Agendas for meetings of the Commission are made available prior to the meeting, which is typically held the third Wednesday of the month. Please note that the Commission will meet on different dates in February, March and April 2008. The new dates are as follows:

The Edina Energy and Environment Commission invites Edina residents to join us in working to promote energy conservation, recycling, clean renewable energy sources, and helping our community stop global warming.

The Commission has established three working groups:

  • Recycling and Solid Waste Working Group
  • Education and Outreach Working Group
  • Climate Change Working Group
    The Climate Change Working Group has four areas of focus: (a) Energy Efficiency; (b) Renewable Energy; (c) Reducing Carbon; and (d) Carbon Tracking and Measurement.

Those interested in serving on a working group should write to edinamail@ci.edina.mn.us or call City Clerk Debra Mangen at 952-826-0408 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Letters of interest can also be sent to Energy/Environment Commission, Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., Edina, MN, 55424. Please indicate the topic(s) that are of greatest interest to you.
